Rolling door for safety lock Afsluitdijk

The dam ‘Afsluitdijk’ - 32 kilometres long - connects the Provinces of Noord-Holland and Friesland. The safety lock literally closes off the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel) from the Waddenzee (Wadden Sea) and is built to protect large parts of the Netherlands against flooding. In order to guarantee future safety, Rijkswaterstaat (the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management) is strengthening the dam in collaboration with building consortium Levvel. Part of the dam’s retaining function is the newly designed safety lock at Kornwerderzand, The rolling door was chosen because of the width of the waterway and will be closed in case of very high water levels. HSM Steel Structures is responsible for fabrication and installation of the rolling door, the mechanical works including the roller carriages and rail system.
